I have always felt pressured to fit societal expectations of who I should be in order to be accepted. I wanted to represent these conflicting feelings between conforming and asserting my individuality. I have produced a body of work in two parts.
The first section depicts moments from the life I feel I am expected to follow. The photos are regimented, neat, centred. I have used a square format which feels contained and created them in black and white to emphasise their uniformity.
The second section works alternatively to the first. It celebrates individuality, choice and unpredictability. My approach is experimental and unrestricted. I use different formats and mediums, bright and varied colours, shapes and compositions.
Making this work feels like a weight off my chest, giving voice to those things that I have always kept buried.
